HOW HOT AIR BALLOONS WORK?

The basic principle behind hot air balloons can be found in physics: hot air rises in a cooler atmosphere. This is happening due to the fact that hot air is lighter than the cool one and has less mass per unit of volume. Mass is defined by the measure of how much matter something contains. The balloon has to be large enough in order to receive a large amount of heated air in an effort to be lifted and take-off.

Inflating the balloon with hot air makes it lighter than the outside atmosphere and allows the balloon to be lifted. In what regards landing, the air inside the balloon starts to become cool allowing the balloon to start descending. The professional pilot is able to operate the control the balloon by using three instruments: an altimeter, a rate-of-climb meter and a temperature gauge for the balloon. The pilot moves the hot air balloon by ascending and descending at the appropriate level. However, this is subject to the direction and strength of the wind.

The balloon is made of reinforced nylon, known as hyperlast. The fabric is really light but extremely strong. It is treated with a polyurethane coating in order to become more airtight and to help the fabric withstand the ultraviolet rays of the sun. The passengers enjoy the flight in a woven wicker basket which is strong, safe and flexible. The two parts of the hot air balloon are connected with stainless steel suspension cables.
